This mixed media piece explores the intersections of identity, heritage, and love. In her depiction of the pre-Communist South Vietnamese flag, Aimy recalls their motherland and the complicated legacy of feeling bound to the history of a country that has dramatically transformed since her parents fled after the fall of Saigon. A child born to immigrant parents lives perpetually between many cultures, walking in all, but at home in none. Nearly 3,000 sticky notes formed layers that create a rippling effect of a fluttering flag whose edges have been dipped in gold. The text in the center of the piece is a mesostic poem, one that can be read both horizontally and vertically, with each column of the overall poem also operating as its own individual poem. Recordings of the longer horizontal poem and each vertical poem in order are included below.
